Hello, I’m Christine Garneau and I want to be your next Ward 5 Councillor. My partner, John, and I purchased 24 acres on Johnson Road early in the pandemic with a plan to return the farm to agricultural production. We quickly learned that visitors couldn’t find Creek View Acres because contractors removed our street sign. Despite several requests to incumbent Councillors and County staff, it still hasn’t been replaced a year later! What started as a jovial “where’s my street sign?” quip around the farm evolved into a serious discussion about what it means to live in one of Brant County’s smaller, outlying communities and the need for fresh, engaged representatives in municipal government. Here is what I stand for:
- Protecting farm lands from development and helping you navigate barriers to agricultural activities;Encouraging strategic development in existing commercial zones rather than residential areas and opposing sprawl that compromises our rural communities and local environment;
- Advocating for family-focused municipal services in Brant’s south and eastern communities including children and youth programming and speaking against cuts to local facilities and services;
- Ensuring County supports for local businesses also meet the needs of Ward 5’s agricultural, home-based, and commercial enterprises; and,
- Responsible use of tax dollars and continued oversight of municipal services including road maintenance and improvements, policing and emergency response, and purchasing policies.
Since 2018, I have worked for a local contractor managing municipal landscape construction, property maintenance, and snow removal contracts. Understanding procurement procedures and public works operations means I am well qualified to ensure taxpayers receive value. Drawing on my broader public sector governance experience, I will ensure your perspectives are heard by decision-makers at the right stages to influence outcomes and Ward 5 is not overlooked.
